Breakout 2000 is an update of the early videogame classic Breakout. The basic principle of Breakout was to use a paddle to keep a bouncing ball in play long enough to break down a wall of colorful bricks. Breakout 2000 builds around this concept by adding a three-dimensional playing field, power ups, and simultaneous two player competitive cooperation.
The playing field for the game is presented as a field of cubes (the bricks) that is placed alternatively at the top or bottom of the screen. You must bounce the ball off of your paddle so that it eliminates all of the bricks on your side of the screen.
In two player mode (or when playing against the computer), one player is breaking down a field of bricks on top of the screen and the other is doing the same thing on the bottom. When your ball is able to travel through the bricks in your field, it travels up to the back of your opponent's field and starts knocking out their bricks (scoring double the normal points for each brick.)
The cooperative nature of the game comes into play when your ball breaks through your opponent's field of bricks. If your opponent fails to deflect your ball with their paddle, it will cause them to lose points.
Breakout Classic is also included on this cartridge. Classic recreates the familiar old two-dimensional style Breakout on your Jaguar. The Classic mode offers two options: Catch (to hold the ball with your paddle) and Breakthru (the balls break the bricks by moving through them instead of bouncing off.)
